The role of dimensional weight profile

Being a novice in SAP Transportation Management, the first few months of exposure with an international LSP client of SCMYUGA taught many interesting concepts and I would like to share one of them about the role of dimensional weight profile below. Happy reading!

A decisive factor for calculating the price of your freight is whether the dimensional weight exceeds the actual weight or not. Also, some of the international freight forwarders offer a practical and advantageous solution by not applying the dimensional weight standards to the free packaging provided the dimensions don’t vary. However, most of them recommend using the shipper’s packaging and checking dimensional weight before handing over the shipment to avoid any additional charges.

The volumetric calculation is as follows:-

Dimensional weight in kg per package = Length x Height x Width in cm / Dim. weight profile

The Dimensional Weight Profile can be maintained in SAP-TM at the Calculation Profile level, at the agreement level as well as the Agreement line item level.

Here we discuss the evaluation of the dimensional weight of an item (Product/Package etc.) and the calculation of charges based on the dimensional weight.

Define dimensional weight profile

Using M5000 for demo purposes

Assign the profile to the Freight agreement Basic data

The profile can also be maintained at the Calculation profile and calculation sheet level as per the requirement

The resolution base of charge type is at the Product level

Scale is maintained with calculation Base “Chargeable weight”

Created Freight order with packaged product

Charges will be calculated as follows:-

Product volume- 20FT3 converted to cm3 /5000= 113.27 USD
